The use of plastic in Singapore, seen from a French point of view

I’m Cécile, a 22-year-old French girl who has come to do an internship in engineering and business. I’m currently in my 4th year of Engineering, Management and Entrepreneurship (ITEEM, France).
I came to Singapore in May. I came here expecting Singapore to be a ‘green’ country, because of its architecture, which incorporates nature, and also because of the laws in place, such as the ban on littering.

However, I quickly realized that my perception was wrong and that the habits here are not at all in line with a policy of sustainable development.

In this post, I’d like to focus on just one issue that shocked me the most when I first arrived and continues to bother me today: the excessive use of plastic.

I was the perfect tourist and spent my first few days wandering around. I ate at a food court, of course, and that’s when I first realized how much plastic is still used in Singapore. It’s possible to take everything away, put the food in plastic boxes, then put the same box in a plastic bag, and finally add disposable plastic cutlery. Take Away plays a big role in the use of plastic, but not only. Even if you’re eating out, it’s sometimes unavoidable to use disposable cutlery because there’s a shortage of reusable cutlery.
